Step by Step

The PermaShell Employment Roadmap

This is the exact sequence we walk through with every newcomer client, adapted to your situation.

1

Apply for Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Without a SIN, you cannot legally receive a paycheque in Canada. Apply in person at a Service Canada Centre or online — it's free. Bring your work permit or PR card. Processing is usually same-day in person. This is always Step 1.

Service Canada Free 9-Digit Number Required Before Day 1 of Work
2

Verify Your Work Authorization Conditions

Open work permits let you work for any employer. Closed (employer-specific) permits restrict you to one company, often requiring an LMIA. Study permits may allow off-campus work under certain conditions. We review your permit so there are no surprises.

3

Assemble Your Identity Document Package

Employers must verify your right to work. Prepare: passport, PR card or COPR, and provincial government-issued photo ID. If your education or experience documents are in another language, arrange certified translations — preferably by a Certified Translator (CTTIC member).

Passport PR Card / COPR Provincial Photo ID CTTIC Translations
4

Complete a Foreign Credential Assessment

If your role is in a regulated profession (engineering, nursing, teaching, trades) or your employer requires degree verification, you need an Educational Credential Assessment. The right body depends on your target province and occupation — WES, IQAS, or ICAS. We point you to the right one.

WES IQAS ICAS NOC Code Regulated Professions
5

Reformat Your Resume for the Canadian Market

Canadian resumes do not include photos, date of birth, or marital status. They are typically 1–2 pages, results-focused, and ATS-optimized. We help you restructure your existing experience using the language Canadian hiring managers expect.

No Photo Policy ATS Keywords LinkedIn Profile Results-Based Format
6

Launch a Targeted Job Search

Start with Canada's Government Job Bank (free, comprehensive), then Indeed Canada and LinkedIn. Industry boards vary by sector — we identify the right ones for your field. Most critically: the majority of positions are filled through networking before ever being posted publicly. We show you how to build a networking strategy that gets you access to the hidden market.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often from newcomers.

Yes — if you have a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and your status has been confirmed, you are typically authorized to work. Your COPR serves as proof of status while your PR card is being processed. We recommend keeping a copy with you at all times during this period.
Not necessarily. Many employers accept international credentials, especially in the private sector. However, regulated professions (medicine, engineering, teaching, trades) require licensing through a provincial regulatory body. For most roles, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from WES or IQAS is sufficient to demonstrate equivalency.
An open work permit lets you work for any employer in Canada (with some exceptions). A closed (employer-specific) work permit ties you to a specific employer, occupation, and sometimes location. Working outside the conditions of a closed permit is a serious violation that can affect your immigration status.
It depends on the organization. WES standard processing typically takes 7–10 business days after all documents are received. Rush service (3 business days) is available for an additional fee. IQAS and ICAS timelines vary. Gathering and sending all required documents from your home country can add significant time — we help you prepare this package correctly from the start.
PermaShell is a private employment and settlement consultation service. We provide information and guidance on the Canadian employment process, document requirements, and job search strategy. We do not provide immigration legal advice or representation. For immigration-specific matters, you should consult a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) authorized by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC).
